Near-infrared spectroscopy of (proto)-planetary nebulae: molecular hydrogen excitation as an evolutionary tracer

چکیده
We present an in-depth analysis of molecular excitation in 11 H2-bright planetary and protoplanetary nebulae (PN and PPN). From newly acquired K-band observations, we extract a number of spectra at positions across each source. H2 line intensities are plotted on ‘column density ratio’ diagrams so that we may examine the excitation in and across each region. To achieve this, we combine the shock models of Smith, Khanzadyan & Davis with the photodissociation region (PDR) models of Black & van Dishoeck to yield a shock-plus-fluorescence fit to each data set. Although the combined shock + fluorescence model is needed to explain the lowand high-energy H2 lines in most of the sources observed (fluorescence accounts for much of the emission from the higher-energy H2 lines), the relative importance of shocks over fluorescence does seem to change with evolutionary status. We find that shock excitation may well be the dominant excitation mechanism in the least evolved PPN (CRL 2688 – in both the bipolar lobes and in the equatorial plane) and in the most evolved PN considered (NGC 7048). Fluorescence, on the other hand, becomes more important at intermediate evolutionary stages (i.e. in ‘young’ PN), particularly in the inner core regions and along the inner edges of the expanding postasymptotic giant branch (AGB) envelope. Since H2 line emission seems to be produced in almost all stages of post-AGB evolution, H2 excitation may prove to be a useful probe of the evolutionary status of PPN and PN alike. Moreover, shocks may play an important role in the molecular gas excitation in (P)PN, in addition to the lowand/or high-density fluorescence usually attributed to the excitation in these sources.

Discovery of Lyα Pumped Molecular Hydrogen Emission in the Planetary Nebulae
We report the first observation of Lyα pumped molecular hydrogen emission lines in planetary nebulae. The H2 emission observed in the ultraviolet spectra of NGC 6853 and NGC 3132 can be explained by excitation of vibrationally hot H2 by Lyα photons. Constraints are placed on the nebular Lyα emission profile, as well as the molecular hydrogen temperature, column density and turbulent motion. The...

We present near-infrared spectroscopy of fluorescent molecular hydrogen (H2) emission from molecular filaments in the reflection nebula NGC 7023. We derive the relative column densities of H2 rotational-vibrational states from the measured line emission and compare these results with several model photodissociation regions covering a range of densities, incident UV-fields, and excitation mechan...
متن کاملHST NICMOS Observation of Proto-Planetary Nebulae
We report NICMOS wide-band and polarimetric observations of four proto-planetary nebulae. Molecular hydrogen emission is detected near the ends of the bipolar lobes of IRAS 17150-3224, which is evidence for the interaction of a fast, collimated outflow with the remnant of the asymptotic giant branch wind.
متن کاملNear Infrared Spectra of Compact Planetary Nebulae
This paper continues our study of the behaviour of near infrared helium recombination lines in planetary nebula. We find that the 1.7007μm 4D–3P HeI line is a good measure of the HeI recombination rate, since it varies smoothly with the effective temperature of the central star. We were unable to reproduce the observed data using detailed photoionisation models at both low and high effective te...
متن کاملInvestigating the Near-infrared Properties of Planetary Nebulae Ii. Medium Resolution Spectra
We present medium-resolution (R ∼ 700) near-infrared (λ = 1 − 2.5 μm) spectra of a sample of planetary nebulae (PNe). A narrow slit was used which sampled discrete locations within the nebulae; observations were obtained at one or more positions in the 41 objects included in the survey. The PN spectra fall into one of four general categories: H I emission line-dominated PNe, H I and H2 emission...
